Can an Expensive Wedding Lead to a Divorce?

February 10, 2021

A wedding is a monumental moment. Although a wedding day is meant to be special, many individuals place more value in the celebration than the marriage itself. This may lead spouses to spend a lot of money on their wedding day or engagement rings. However, a recent study shows that there is a correlation between expensive weddings and increased rates of divorce.

Why Did the Study Reveal?

A study done by researchers at Emory University suggests that having a big, expensive wedding could actually negatively impact the length of a marriage. The study, which looked at over 3,000 married couples, found that spouses who had a more expensive wedding were more likely to divorce than spouses with a modest wedding. In fact, those who spent less than $1,000 on their wedding were the couples who were least likely to divorce. The divorce rates were higher for spouses who spent $20,000 or more on their wedding day.

Researchers also determined that the amount of money spent on an engagement ring had an impact on the likelihood of divorce. In fact, the research team found that spouses who spent between $2,000 and $4,000 on a ring were 1.3 times more likely to divorce than those who spent less than $1,000. Also, spouses who had at least 200 guests were 57 percent less likely to get divorced than those who had 10 guests or less.

This data can be important for spouses. The study suggests that spouses should spend their money on something that benefits their marriage. This can help to focus the attention on the couple itself instead of the celebration of a wedding.

What Should I Do if I Want a Divorce?

A divorce is sometimes the best option when spouses are unable to reach an agreement with each other. When a spouse reaches this point, it is best to contact a lawyer to initiate the divorce process. A family law lawyer can help advocate for their client’s wants and needs and tackle other issues related to divorce, like child custody and alimony. A lawyer can also help ensure that their client receives their fair share of the marital assets.
